exiftool -n -GPS* image.jpgGPS coordinates in decimal format (-n)
Modification
exiftool -Author="John Doe" image.jpgEdit the Author tag
exiftool -all= image.jpgRemove ALL metadata
exiftool -GPS*= image.jpgRemove GPS data only
Export & Batch
exiftool -j image.jpg > metadata.jsonExport metadata to JSON
exiftool -csv -r folder/ > report.csvExport every file in a folder to CSV
exiftool -all= -r -ext jpg folder/Clean every JPG image in a folder
Best practices
Recommendations for optimal use
Do
- Back up originalsAlways make a copy before editing metadata
- Use the -a -G1 optionsShow all tags with their groups for a complete analysis
- Export to JSON/CSVStructured formats for analysis and documentation
- Check GPS with -nThe -n option gives precise decimal coordinates
- Document investigationsKeep track of commands and results for reports
- Safe batch processingTest on one file before recursive processing
Avoid
- Editing without a backupChanges may be irreversible
- Ignoring warningsWarnings often point to real problems
- Relying on GPS aloneGPS data can be spoofed or inaccurate
- Ignoring the lawRespect privacy and copyright
- Deleting blindlyCheck before deleting with -all=
- Skipping validationAlways check results after editing
Installation
Cross-platform installation guide
Linux (Debian/Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install libimage-exiftool-perlor simply
sudo apt install exiftoolmacOS (Homebrew)
brew install exiftoolOr via MacPorts:
sudo port install p5-image-exiftoolWindows
Download the standalone executable from the official website
https://exiftool.org/Download exiftool(-k).exe and add it to your PATH
Checking the installation
exiftool -verShould display the version number (12.70+)
Privacy considerations
Metadata can contain sensitive information (GPS location, author, edit history). Make sure you respect privacy and data protection laws when extracting and sharing metadata.
Common sensitive data:
- Exact GPS coordinates where the photo was taken
- Device and owner information
- Precise creation/modification dates and times
- Author, organization and revision history
